Our academic year consists of four 10-week Terms, Fall (September – November), Winter (January – March), Spring (April – May), and Summer (June – August). We offer both in-person and online classes and personalized private tutoring to provide our students with the most convenient learning experience possible.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ADULT GERMAN COURSES
In-Person Classes are held at the Houston Saengerbund, 1703 Heights Boulevard, Houston, TX 77008.
Online Classes. All online classes are held via Zoom. You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone connected to the internet. You can downloaded Zoom at zoom.us, or if you are outside the U.S., at the Zoom website for your country.
Proficiency Levels. We teach all levels of proficiency, corresponding to the Goethe-Institut designations: A1.1, A1.2, A1.3 – A2.1, A2.2, A2.3 – B1.1, B1.2, B1.3 – B2.1, B2.2, B2.3 – C1 and C2. The objectives and contents of these courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). We determine a student’s proficiency via an online test.
Instruction Materials. We use instruction material recommended by the Goethe-Instituts, universities, and other sources worldwide. Upon registration, you will be informed of any required books or course materials you must purchase. To ensure that you have the correct editions for the course, please double–check the information provided.
Discounts. Returning students receive a discount of ten percent for in-person classes, and there usually is an early registration discount for each session.
Cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel a course if it does not meet the required number of enrolled students. In this case, refunds will be issued to all enrolled students. If the class is canceled during the Term, we will either schedule makeup classes or issue refunds at our discretion.
Corporate Classes. We offer convenient classes at your facilities for your employees. For more information, please contact Angelika at angelika@germansouthwest.org or 713–822–4257.
Private Tutoring. We provide personalized private tutoring sessions with highly experienced and knowledgeable instructors. Our instructors are available on an hourly basis, and we offer packages of ten hours for your convenience. ONLINE/IN-PERSON – 2023 Summer 2 Term – 2-Week Intensive German Classes for Adults – Aug 14 to Aug 25 (M-F)
These are refresher classes – Levels A1/A2 – B1/B2 – C1/C2 – NOT for beginners. Please specify your level of proficiency at time of registration, and note in the comment section whether you wish to enroll for online or in-person classes.
- Classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays
- 10 classes – 15 hours of German instruction
- August 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18
- August 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25
- Each class is 1½ hours long and includes two 45-minute teaching units
- Evening Classes from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. (Online or In-Person must be selected at time of registration)

Mastering Deutsch: Your Path to Language Excellence!
After completion of the A1.1 – A1.3 classes, a person can understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences. That person can introduce him/herself and others as well as ask others about themselves – e.g. where they live, who they know and what they own – and can respond to questions of this nature. Can communicate in a simple manner if the person they are speaking to speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.

German language levels can be roughly described as Beginners (A1.1 – A2.3) with varying level of expertise. Intermediate speakers fall into the B1.1 – B2.3 group, and the C1-C2 speakers have a language competency comparable to that of a native German speaker.

Experience the German fascinations with “Krimis”. Did you know that more than 3,000 Krimi novels are published every year? We will read one short German Krimi (“Böses Erwachen in Heidelberg” by Stefanie Wülfing, Klett Verlag), review A2/B1 grammar concepts and practice writing and conversational skills.

Want to practice your German but don’t have time to meet twice a week and complete weekly assignments? Have some questions about the German grammar? Interested in improving your listening and reading skills? Join me for “lunch bunch”! During the lunch hour we will read about current topics in Germany, answer your grammar or vocabulary questions and practice conversational skills.

Did you ever scratch your head over a German grammar concept or are you enjoying solving puzzles? Well, look no further – this grammar class is your opportunity to get into every detail of the German language. We will be reviewing and practicing grammar concepts for the level B2-C2, using the book “Grammatik aktiv. Verstehen. Üben. Sprechen. B2-C1” by Cornelsen Verlag
B2/C1 Advanced German Conversation/Grammar, 6:30 – 8:00, Sep 12 – Nov 16 (Tue), 15 hours, $277.50
This is the class for you if you wish to learn about contemporary Germany, improve your conversation skills, and your listening and writing competencies. We learn from a variety of literary sources, current events, newspapers, short stories and songs, and watch short movies, video clips, and listen to podcasts. We review grammar, as needed, with the book “Grammatik Aktiv. Deutsch als Fremdsprache B2-C1 Verstehen, Üben, Sprechen” by Cornelsen. With humor and laughter, we maintain a relaxed atmosphere where students feel comfortable to participate without feeling self-conscious.
Literaturkreis, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., 4 times a year (Sat), 6 hours, $225 annually
Interested in reading and discussing a German book? The Literaturkreis will meet online four times a year on a Saturday morning for 90 minutes. We will be reading books from the reading list of the Goethe Institut C2-Prüfungsliste. The next meeting will be on Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 10 -11.30 a.m., and we will be discussing: Urs Widmer: Das Buch des Vaters.
