GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ADULT GERMAN COURSES

Unlock a World of Opportunities! Learn German – the Language of Innovation and Culture

• In-Person Classes are held at the Houston Saengerbund, 1703 Heights Boulevard, Houston, TX 77008.
  Online Classes. All online classes are held via Zoom. You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone connected to the internet. You can downloaded Zoom at zoom.us, or if you are outside the U.S., at the Zoom website for your country.
• Proficiency Levels. We teach all levels of proficiency, corresponding to the Goethe-Institut designations: A1.1, A1.2, A1.3 – A2.1, A2.2, A2.3 – B1.1, B1.2, B1.3 – B2.1, B2.2, B2.3 – C1 and C2. The objectives and contents of these courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). We determine a student’s proficiency via an online test.
• Instruction Materials. We use instruction material recommended by the Goethe-Instituts, universities, and other sources worldwide. Upon registration, you will be informed of any required books or course materials you must purchase. To ensure that you have the correct editions for the course, please double–check the information provided.
• Discounts. Returning students receive a discount of ten percent for 10 week classes that meet twice a week, and there usually is an early registration discount for each session.
• Cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel a course if it does not meet the required number of enrolled students. In this case, refunds will be issued to all enrolled students. If the class is canceled during the Term, we will either schedule makeup classes or issue refunds at our discretion.
• Corporate Classes. We offer convenient classes at your facilities for your employees. For more information, please contact Angelika at angelika@germansouthwest.org or 713–822–4257.
• Private Tutoring. We provide personalized private tutoring sessions with highly experienced and knowledgeable instructors. Our instructors are available on an hourly basis, and we offer packages of ten hours for your convenience. Fluent German: Your Journey to Language Mastery!

• In-Person – A1.3 and Goethe Exam Preparation – for Adults, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Mar 24 – May 08, 2025 (M/W), 30 hours, $595

This last class on the A1 level is designed to prepare students for the prestigious Goethe Exam exam. It includes training in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on exam strategies, vocabulary building, and grammar review. Students will practice with official sample tests, receive personalized feedback, and develop confidence in real-life communication scenarios. Whether you’re a beginner or aiming for advanced proficiency, this course will help you achieve your Goethe Exam goals efficiently.

Standard German Classes

The Goethe-Institute proficiency levels are structured as follows; each level assesses reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, helping learners progress systematically in their German language proficiency.

• A1–A2 (Beginner): Basic communication skills for everyday situations, simple conversations, and fundamental grammar. Ideal for those starting their German journey.
• B1–B2 (Intermediate): Ability to handle common social and work-related interactions, express opinions, and understand more complex texts. Suitable for independent users.
• C1–C2 (Advanced/Proficient): Fluent and precise communication, comprehension of demanding texts, and mastery of complex grammar. C2 represents near-native proficiency.

Dive into the thrilling world of German crime stories while improving your language skills. Read, analyze, and discuss detective stories, enhancing vocabulary and comprehension in a fun and engaging way.

• Online – B1/B2 Lunch Bunch – 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m., Mar 10 – May 21, 2025 (Wed), 10 hours, $199

A relaxed, interactive class designed for learners who want to practice German over lunch. Practice and improve conversational skills, expand vocabulary, and discuss engaging, current topics in a supportive group setting.

• Online – B2/C1 Advanced German Conversation/Grammar – 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Mar 18 – May 20, 2025 (Tue), 15 hours, $299

A dynamic course combining in-depth grammar review with advanced conversation practice. Strengthen fluency, precision, and confidence in expressing complex ideas naturally and correctly. We will learn about current events from a variety of literary sources like newspapers, short stories or songs;, and watch short movies, video clips and listen to various podcasts. With humor and laughter, we maintain a relaxed atmosphere where students feel comfortable to participate without feeling self-conscious.

• Online – Goethe Exam Introduction – 1.5 hours, Date and Time TBD by Mutual Arrangement with Instructor, $135

Thinking about taking a Goethe exam and not sure about your proficiency level? In this 90-minute class you will hear about the four modules of the exam (Hoeren – Lesen – Schreiben – Sprechen) and you will be introduced to the types of questions and requirements for each module and the best way approach them.
