Literatur des Vormärz – Stürmischer Anfang der deutschen Identitätsfindung? Literature of the Age of Metternich – Stormy Beginning of Finding a German Identity?

Vormärz was a period in the history of Germany preceding the 1848 March Revolution in the states of the German Confederation. The beginning of the period is less well-defined: some place the starting point directly after the fall of Napoleon and the establishment of the German Confederation in 1815; others, typically those emphasizing the Vormärz as a period of political uprising, place the beginning at the French July Revolution of 1830.

Internationally known as the Age of Metternich, it was characterized by Austrian and Prussian police states, which practiced censorship on a massive scale in response to revolutionary calls for liberalism. In a cultural sense, the same period is known as Biedermeier as a conclusion of the Romanticist era.

Decades before Germany was even founded, it was not only heatedly discussed, but fought about, what that one German nation should look like, and what common beliefs should be used as guidelines for all.

The literary examples discussed in this course will help to understand what the issues of that time were, leading up to the civic revolution of 1848/1849. People were opposed to restore the power of nobles and church once again and demanded democracy and civic rights. A desire to live as one nation with common rights for all grew and was reflected in the writing of the time.
