The academic year 2024/2025 for children and youths at the German Institute for the Southwest consists of three Terms:
- Fall: August 17 – November 2, 2024 (no classes on Aug 31, Oct 19; Makeup Day Nov 9)
- Winter: November 16 – February 8, 2025 (no classes on Nov 30, Dec 21-28, 2025; Makeup Day Feb 15, 2025)
- Last day of School in 2024: Dec 14; First Day of School in 2025: Jan 4, 2025
- Spring: February 22 – May 17, 2025 (no classes on Mar 7-16, Apr 19; Makeup Day May 24)
Additional classes or workshops may be offered during the Summer.
Spring Term Details
- Start Date: February 22, 2025
- In-Person Classes: Held on Saturdays at Spirit of Joy! Lutheran Church (7550 Crownridge Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77382).
- Online Option: For students unable to attend in-person, an online class is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- The registration process is the same as for in-person classes.
- Simply indicate that you wish to participate in the online course during registration.
Special Classes and Workshops also will continue online, starting on February 24, 2025.

Online Classes. All online classes are held via Zoom. You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone connected to the internet. If you have not downloaded Zoom, you can do so at zoom.us, or if you are outside the U.S., at the Zoom website for your country.
Material Fees. All classes require a material fee of $35.00

Welcome and Pertinent Information
We welcome children, pre-teens, and teens aged 5 to 16 years who are interested in learning and exploring the language and culture of German-speaking countries. Our courses are designed for:
- Beginners: Little or no prior knowledge of German.
- Intermediate & Advanced Students: Those who can communicate in a German-speaking environment or speak German at home.
All our teachers are native German speakers or have comparable proficiency. Each school year emphasizes seasonal traditions and special events in German-speaking countries, such as:
- German Unity Day/Tag der Deutschen Einheit
- St. Martin’s Day/Martinstag
- Christmas/Weihnachten
- Fasching/Karneval
- Ostern/Easter
- Mayfest (Arrival of Spring Celebration)/Maifest
These cultural celebrations are real highlights for our students!
Language Tests
We are affiliated with the Goethe-Institut, the official German cultural organization, and are licensed to offer the prestigious Goethe language exams, recognized worldwide as proof of German language skills. For more details, visit: Goethe Language Exams
Class Locations
Our courses are offered both online and in-person at the following locations:

- Saengerbund Houston: 1703 Heights Boulevard, Houston, TX 77008
Note: Classes in Cinco Ranch/Katy and Fort Bend County are currently postponed while we search for a suitable location.
Online Classes: Conducted via Zoom. Install the free program at zoom.us or your country’s version.
Course Materials
- A $35 material fee applies to most in-person classes.
- Intermediate and advanced levels require additional book purchases.
Proficiency Levels
To ensure proper placement, students’ proficiency levels are assessed on the first day of class. Classes are then formed accordingly. For details about the different class levels, please visit the course description section on our website.
Age Guidelines for Classes
Our course descriptions indicate the approximate age group for each class. If your child has a birthday during the school year (Fall through Summer Terms), they will remain with their current teacher until the term ends.
Cancellation Policy
We reserve the right to cancel a course if the required minimum number of students is not met.
Tuition Discounts
- Returning Students: Receive a 10% discount on 10-week classes that meet twice a week.

This interactive online course is designed for children and teenagers who already have basic knowledge of German vocabulary and grammar.
