German Language Classes for Children and Teens

General Information about Our Youth Courses

Class Locations. Classes in Cinco Ranch/Fort Bend County are currently postponed while we search for a suitable location for our school.  Classes in The Woodlands take place at Spirit of Joy! Lutheran Church, 7550 Crownridge Drive, The Woodlands, TX  77382.

Course Materials.  Except as noted, there will be a material fee of $35 for each course, and upper level courses will require purchase of books.

Proficiency Levels. Our students often have different levels of experience in the German language.  In order for proper placement of each student, we determine the level of proficiency on the first day of a course, and form the classes accordingly.

Tuition Discounts. Returning students receive a discount of ten percent for in-person classes, and there usually is an early registration discount for each session (see below).

Cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel a course that does not have the requisite number of students enrolled.

Online Classes.  Our online classes are held via Zoom. You can install a basic, free version of the program at zoom.us.


Winter Term 2020 – 12 Week Standard Course – The Woodlands – Jan 11 – Apr 4

Classes are held at Spirit of Joy! Lutheran Church, 7550 Crownridge Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77382 .

15 Fairy Tale Classes – for beginners in German!

Here is a more detailed course description:

  • Literacy/oral language course for children aged 5 – 8
  • Language ability level: beginner/no prior knowledge needed
  • Course language: English to tell the main plot and introduce the characters, limited basic German vocabulary (about 20 – 40 per lesson )
  • Language support: picture/word – cards, simple picture /word- lists  will be provided prior to each lesson
  • Course duration: 15 hours ( July 1 – 31 ), course time :  9:30 – 10:30 a.m., M,W, F and some Saturdays
  • Course language goals: participants are introduced to some basic German vocabulary (number words , colors, adjectives, commonly used nouns to name people and places , simple verb phrases). Children are encouraged to repeat these words to get familiar with  pronunciation/sound patterns
  • Each lesson will be dedicated to one fairy tale; participants  engage in predicting and retelling parts of the tale and are encouraged to relate to their own experiences
  • Activities in each lesson are based on the fairy tales plot and characters ( singing, drawing/ mapping , acting out with simple props )
  • Course material: paper, crayons, pencil, scissors, glue, etc. ; additional will items be announced before the course day
  • The course will end with creating a fairy tale as a group

  • Literacy/oral language course for children aged 6-8
  • Language ability level: native and advanced German speakers
  • Course duration: 15 hours (July 6 – August 7); course time: 9:00 – 10:00 am; Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
  • Course Language Goals:

Participants will get to know famous characters in legends and tales of German speaking countries, such as Siegfried, Till Eulenspiegel, Wilhelm Tell, and many others, and will strengthen essential skills for reading and comprehension (phonemic awareness, fluency – automatic decoding, building vocabulary, verbal reasoning). The characteristics and the structure of legends and fairy tales will be discussed to enable participants to tell their own legends and tales. In addition, participants will get an overview of the word classes “nouns, verbs, and adjectives”, and their importance in grammar and spelling. They will also learn to distinguish the two German past tenses, and practice the simple past (Präteritum) of regular and irregular verbs, as is typically used in narratives.

  • Each week, participants will meet one famous character and hear about his/her story during playful learning activities, including listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Course Material: paper, pencil, crayons, scissors, glue
  • The course will end with creating a radio play recording of a German legend.

Summer 2020 – 5-Week Online Beginning German for Young Persons

  • Course language: Limited basic German vocabulary; English to explain cultural traditions and aspects, as well as for instructions if needed.
  • Language support: picture/word – cards; simple picture/word – lists; instructional videos (will be provided prior to each lesson).
  • Course duration: 15 hours (July 6 – August 7); course time: 10:15 – 11:15 am; Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
  • Encouraging and interactive activities will introduce participants to German pronunciation and sound patterns, and to some basic German vocabulary (salutations, numbers, colors, family, origin, means of transport, likes and dislikes, adjectives, basic verbs, …).
  • Course Language Goals: While travelling through the German speaking countries Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, participants will learn to manage first basic everyday topics and events successfully in German language. On their journey, they will experience various aspects of what`s considered to be typical German and develop some strong interest for German speaking cultures.
  • Course Material: paper, pencil, crayons, scissors, glue
  • The course will end with the completion of a travel diary.

Summer 2020 – 5-Week Online Advanced German for Young Persons

Die Deutsche Märchenstrasse: eine Reise durch das Leben und Werk der Gebrüder Grimm

The German Fairy Tale Route: a Journey through the Life and Works of the Brothers Grimm

  • Course duration: 15 hours (July 6 – August 7); course time: 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.; Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
  • Course Language Goals:

Participants will travel virtually through the life history of the Grimm brothers, who collected and published the most famous German tales. They will explore the geography of Germany and improve their research skills when visiting interesting places along the German Fairy Tale Route, which starts in Hanau, where the two brothers were born, and ends in Bremen, famous for the “Bremen Town Musicians.” Reading and listening to a variety of the Grimms’ fairy tales will help participants to learn all about the characteristics and the structure of fairy tales, and will provide opportunities for analysis and interpretation in engaging and interactive group activities.

A weekly spelling focus will help participants strengthen their spelling skills.

  • Course Material: paper, pencil, crayons, scissors, glue
  • The course will end with creating a travel brochure about the German Fairy Tale Route.
