German Language Classes for Children and Teens

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all Summer and Fall 2020 classes are currently online. As soon as it feasible, we will return to a regular class format. Online classes will continue for students unable to come to a person-to-person class.

Online ClassesAll online classes are held via Zoom.  You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone connected to the internet.  If you have not downloaded Zoom, you can do so at zoom.us, or if you are outside the U.S., at the Zoom website for your country.

General Information about Our Youth Courses

Class Locations. Classes in Cinco Ranch/Fort Bend County are currently postponed while we search for a suitable location for our school.  Classes in The Woodlands take place at Spirit of Joy! Lutheran Church, 7550 Crownridge Drive, The Woodlands, TX  77382.

Course Materials.  Except as noted, there will be a material fee of $35 for each course, and upper level courses will require purchase of books.

Proficiency Levels. Our students often have different levels of experience in the German language.  In order for proper placement of each student, we determine the level of proficiency on the first day of a course, and form the classes accordingly.

Tuition Discounts. Returning students receive a discount of ten percent for in-person classes, and there usually is an early registration discount for each session (see below).

Cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel a course that does not have the requisite number of students enrolled.

Online Classes.  Our online classes are held via Zoom. You can install a basic, free version of the program at zoom.us.


Fall 2020 – 12-Week Online German Class 1 for Beginners – 5-7 years of age (Tue – Thu – Sat)

In order to participate in the classes, your child will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet or phone connected to the internet. See the course description below.

This course guides our very young students with little or no prior knowledge of German through everyday topics and events in the German language. With engaging and interactive online lessons and activities, they learn basic German vocabulary through engaging songs, interesting stories, fun games, and creative art projects in a very playful environment.  Particular emphasis is placed on seasonal traditions of German speaking countries to help students develop a general understanding and strong interest in German culture.  Some homework helps for additional understanding.

Fall 2020 – 12-Week Online German Class 2 for Advanced Speakers – 5-7 years of age (Tue – Thu – Sat)

Vocabulary expansion and communication are still the main objectives of this course, and it equips our young participants with a very strong and sound basis to develop good reading and writing skills. Students learn how to read letters, syllables, words, sentences and more in a very playful environment. They are also encouraged to write their own first sentences and short stories during engaging online activities and interactive group activities.

Seasonal traditions of German culture and special German events in 2020-21 occupy an important part in the program in order to develop a general understanding and strong interest in German culture. Weekly homework is provided to deepen their understanding.

Fall 2020 – 12-Week Online German Class 1 for Beginners – Pre-Teens 8-11 years of age (Tue and Sat)

They are introduced to the characteristics of important text formats, grammar concepts and spelling strategies according to the educational standards in Germany. Engaging online activities and interactive group activities motivate students to be creative and learn independently. Seasonal traditions of German cultures and special German events of 2020-21 occupy an important part in the program in order to develop a general understanding and strong interest in German culture.  Some weekly homework will be provided for additional practice.

Seasonal traditions of German cultures and special German events of 2020-21 occupy an important part in the program in order to develop a general understanding and strong interest in German culture.  Weekly homework is provided to strengthen the understanding of the material.

In addition to our popular German classes for children and teens, we have developed a great series of online workshops for the term. The students will explore the historical background of German Unification through a variety of interactive activities, and experience how Germany celebrates October 3, Tag der Deutschen Einheit.

When fall slowly turns into winter, and the cold and the early dark make the hours before bedtime so long and lonely, children in Germany bring some light and happiness into everybody´s lives when celebrating a festival of lights on St. Martin`s Day.

During this workshop children will hear the legends of St. Martin, discover the German traditions around this festivity and build their own St. Martin`s lantern.

Young participants will need a helping hand during the craft activity.

Students are invited to get together into the spirit of Christmas and explore seasonal traditions of German speaking cultures with lots of playful activities. As a little helper of the “Weihnachtsmann” and the “Christkindl,”, they will make a small Christmas present.

Younger children will need a helping hand during the craft activity.
