German Language Classes for Children and Teens

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all Winter and Spring 2021 classes are currently online. As soon as it is feasible, we will return to a regular class format. Online classes will continue for students unable to come to an in-person class.

Online ClassesAll online classes are held via Zoom.  You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone connected to the internet.  If you have not downloaded Zoom, you can do so at zoom.us, or if you are outside the U.S., at the Zoom website for your country.

General Information about Our Youth Courses

Class Locations. Classes in Cinco Ranch/Katy and Fort Bend County are currently postponed while we search for a suitable location for our school.  Classes in The Woodlands take place at Spirit of Joy! Lutheran Church, 7550 Crownridge Drive, The Woodlands, TX  77382.  Online classes are conducted via Zoom.

Course Materials.  Except as noted, there will be a material fee of $35 for each in-person course, and upper level classes will require purchase of books.

Proficiency Levels. Our students often have different levels of experience in the German language.  In order for proper placement of each student, we determine the level of proficiency on the first day of a course, and form the classes accordingly.

Age Indication for Classes. We indicate the approximate age level of the students in the class in our course descriptions. However, if your child has a birthday during the Fall through Summer Terms and no longer falls in the age group, the student will remain with the teacher with whom the classes started in the fall.

Tuition Discounts. Returning students receive a discount of ten percent for in-person classes, and there usually is an early registration discount for each session (see below).

Cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel a course that does not have the requisite number of students enrolled.

SUMMER 2021 YOUTH COURSES

Summer 2021 – “Urlaub auf dem Bauernhof” – Vacation on the farm 4-Week Online Class in German Basics for Children (5-7 years) – (Mon – Wed – Fri) Jun 14 – Jul 9

This is a literacy/oral language course for children age 5-7. The students are not expected to know any German. The class language will be English to tell stories and give instructions; limited basic German vocabulary.

The students will go on an adventurous trip to the German countryside to Farmer Boelle’s farm, and will be his indispensable helpers. With playful and engaging learning activities, the children will be introduced to basic German vocabulary (simple verb phrases, number words, colors, adjectives, and commonly used nouns to name people, animals, and places).

This course is a great opportunity for students without any prior knowledge of German, and for children who have attended our beginners’ class to revise and extend their knowledge in new surroundings and situations. An End of Trip – presentation will be the festive conclusion of this course.

Additional language support: picture/word – cards, simple picture /word – lists will be provided prior to each lesson

Summer 2021 – “Eine Reise um die Welt!” – A Trip around the World – 4-Week Online Class in German Basics – 8-11 years of age (Mon – Wed – Fri) Jun 21 – Jul 16

This is a literacy/oral language course for youths age 8-11. The students are not expected to know any German. The class language will be basic German, with English to explain cultural traditions and aspects, and for instruction as needed.

During an adventurous trip to places on all seven continents, participants will learn to manage basic everyday topics and events successfully in German language. On their journey, they will walk through the biggest cities in the world, meet famous people, and see amazing wildlife and nature.

Encouraging and interactive activities introduce participants to German pronunciation and sound patterns, and to a variety of basic German vocabulary and phrases, useful in daily life situations (salutations, numbers, colors, adjectives, basic verbs, traveling, etc.)

This course is a great opportunity for participants who have no prior knowledge of German and for participants who need to refresh and deepen their beginning German knowledge.  An-End-of-Trip presentation will be the festive conclusion of this course.

Summer 2021 – Schreibwerkstatt “Wir sind Goethe” – Writing Workshop “We are Goethe” 4-Week Online Intermediate German Class – 8-11 years of age (Mon – Wed – Fri) – Jun 21 – Jul 16

Students enjoy creative, exciting, and stimulating lessons in writing as they publish their own German magazine.  They will describe and discuss current topics and seasonal traditions in German-speaking countries.

They learn what it means to be a young reporter and editor, as they define the reader target group, understand the readers’ interest, conduct in-depth research, and lean appropriate, safe, and secure way to use the internet.  They will gain respect for other persons’ copyrights, learn characteristics of a newspaper article, and how to make an attractive layout and design.  Successful strategies foe spell-check and grammar control are included.

Summer 2021 – “Komm mit nach Berlin!” – a Trip to the Capital of Germany – Come with us to Berlin – 4-Week Online German Basics Class – 12-16 years of age (Mon – Wed – Fri) – Jun 21 – Jul 16

This is a literacy/oral language course for youths aged 12-16.  Students will practice a variety of strategies to improve reading and listening skills with a variety of authentic German material, and expand their vocabulary and communication skills.

Students enjoy creative, exciting, and stimulating lessons as they encounter each week a famous and inspiring German personality.  They will meet German rapper CRO; celebrate the 100th birthday of Sophie Scholl, renowned resistance personality during the Nazi reign; Nobel Prize winner Robert Koch, the scientist for whom the eponymous research institute for disease control prevention is named; and Cornelia Funke, author of teen novels who has sold more than 20 Mio. books worldwide. The class will end with a fun quiz trivia challenge.

Summer 2021 – Goethe Language Certificate A1 Exam Preparation – “Fit in Deutsch 1” 4-Week Online Intensive German Exam Preparation for Teenagers (12-16 years) (Mon – Wed – Fri) – Jun 21 – Jul 16

This is a literacy/oral language course for youths age 12-16, and is for students who have completed their level A1 German classes or have a similar command of the German language.  The classes will be taught in basic German with English for instruction as needed.

The “Goethe Zertifikat A1- Fit in Deutsch” certifies that candidates have acquired very basic language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing of German, corresponding to the first level (A1) of the six levels that determine foreign language competence.  In the class, the students review important study content and become familiar with the demands of the exam. There will be model tests and simulation of real exam situations, and they will learn the specific procedures applied in this exam.  Course Materials: paper, pencil

Vocabulary expansion and communication are still the main objectives of this course, but it also equips our young participants with a very strong and sound basis to develop good reading and writing skills.  Students learn how to read letters, syllables, words, sentences and more in a very playful environment.  During engaging online activities and interactive group activities they are further encouraged to write their own first sentences and short stories.

Seasonal traditions and special German events in 2021 occupy an important part in the program in order to develop a general understanding and strong interest in German culture. Some homework is provided weekly for additional practice.

 

Spring 2021 – 6-Week Online German Class for Advanced Speakers – 5-7 years of age (Tue – Thu – Sat) Apr 13 – May 22

Engaging online activities and interactive group activities motivate students to be creative and learn independently. Seasonal traditions of German cultures and special German events of 2021 occupy an important part in the program in order to develop a general understanding and strong interest in German culture.  Some weekly homework will be provided for additional practice.
